A Lot of Bullspit - 2020 ROW80 R3-W5

This week has had a lot of bullspit in it. Shortly after my last trip to buy reno supplies, I discovered mold in my bathroom. While that's not shocking, it's pretty much because they appear to have left wet drywall in the wall and covered the wall with another layer of drywall instead of properly repairing it after a leak. Geniuses. This is a mixed bag. It means I may have to do the tub area sooner than I expected. It is the same wall as the annoying peeling paint, so that's kind of good. I may just need to replace much of the wall, which is about 1.5 drywall boards because it's a small room. Cost wise, the wall repair isn't so bad. I'm not looking forward to having to deal with it, but I acquired the PPE gear for it and the mold removal supplies. Now, here's where the project may change substantially. I was originally planning to install a tub surround over the tile and then use the Rust Oleum tub restore stuff, but if there is mold in the wall, it's likely better to replace the rest sooner. And if I'm going to tear out the walls, I'd rather have a walk in shower set up for many reasons. One of those reasons is that I prefer showers. Also, cleaning a tub at my height is painful. Time will tell on what I end up doing with this.

I did make some progress though. I got a mini hacksaw and was able to remove the drain from my sink. I think the mold removal will take quite a bit of time, so I can work on the rest while I await the arrival of my last PPE item. Also, I don't think I can fit in all the work required into the evenings, but I was able to tidy up the drywall dust, clean my back-splash, and seal it. And I can now complete the sink install. Thankfully, that is far from the moldy area. However, I have been unable to put a mirror in because my stud finder is continually telling me there are wires everywhere and the one place it said was empty either has a metal conduit or pipe there. I have ordered a Walabot because I'm done with the guessing. I may need a different mirror. Again.

This morning, I scraped my thigh on one of the screws from the vanity because I had to remove it before removing all of the strapping I put in to make the vanity fit as the sink wouldn't fit as it should. It's OK if that makes sense to no one but me. Then I had to cut divots in the back of the vanity so it would fit under my tile backsplash. That was cut number 2. There is a gap on the left side and the Internet suggests just getting molding to cover that.

I'm so tired of this project. I just want it to be over.

I did step out for a visit to a museum yesterday and that was nice.

But seriously, this thing needs to end. THIS IS NOT A RENO BLOG! I need to get back to writing.

Well, the home update is mostly covered for today. I did get an HDMI KVM switch, so I can have less on my desk and use my large monitor for both my work and my home laptop without plugging and unplugging the cabling. I was getting worried about the port on the back of the monitor from all the moving around and it was exhausting anyway. I still have no shortage of decluttering to do around here, but it's slowly improving. So slow. I want that done too.

FITNESS

We are finally getting back to martial arts though trying outside practices for now. And I'm aiming to scooter more now that summer is turning to more normal temperatures.

FRENCH

I haven't missed a day this week. Some days it is so hard to put the effort in, but I'm seeing so results. I'm slowly having more words in my bucket and more confidence to use them.

GAMING

I'm really trying with Breath of the Wild folks, but I wanted Ocarina of Time or something like Skyrim and what I got was, "everywhere you walk once you finally do get the stupid glider will kill you in two shots." Oh and, "this game is about climbing fucking mountains." Maybe I should find a video walkthrough, but I feel like games shouldn't need walkthroughs in order to be fun. Seriously. I've been playing video games since sometime in the 80s. I've played every system except the Playstation 4. This includes: Commodore 64 and 128, Atari, Intellivision, Unisys Icon, NES, SNES, Turbo Graffix 16, Sega Genesis, Gamecube, Playstation 1, 2, 3, XBOX, XBOX 360, XBOX One, Various PC games (Age of Empires, Dark Age of Camelot, World of Warcraft, Diablo 2 and 3, Conan, Neverwinter, and so many others). I feel like I'm in a PVP zone with no hope of leveling up because some douche high level is killing n00bs because they have nothing better to do.

MUSIC

This isn't happening for me right now. I think it's too much with the reno and French, so it's on the back burner for now.

WRITING

No progress this week.

2020 Vision

Mostly, I’ve been planning for the new year, but I discovered I know Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. It was a recollection under the influence that brought this to light. I also discovered I still suck at drawing, but I’m okay with that. I used to think I had to be good at everything, and I’ve realized that’s just not so. Some friends and I recently hit up a local board game pub. It was a pretty fun night. The first game was Balderdash and I was terrible at it. Because I was the writer in the group, some of my friends thought I should be more embarrassed about it and hide the fact that I don’t spend all my free time learning advanced vocabulary. But I’m not upset about it. Why? Two reasons: 1. I now know what I don’t know. 2. If one takes a close look at the top selling novels on the market, the level of the language used is not the level of many of the words in Balderdash. Not that I’m comparing my own work to those, but audience is what matters in writing. To me, it is far better to e...

Fortifying Friday - Rejection

Yesterday, I received my first rejection from an agent. It stung. It wasn't that it was bad. It was worded in a way that it may have even been personally written. Regardless, rejection never feels good unless you were secretly hoping to stay home and do nothing when a friend made plans with you. Then it feels great! I might be an introvert ;) Anyway, it hurts a bit extra when you have other things going on. Between the worries of the state of the world and being unemployed, it felt much like being kicked while I was already down. The agent said she couldn't connect with my book though she really wanted to. She also said not to take her rejection as any kind of sign that I should give up. It was nice as far as rejections go. So, I lay there for a bit. Then I let my friends know via social media. Several said that I had hit a milestone and I should try to collect as many as possible this year. Rejections, they said, were a badge of honour awarded for putting myself out there. See...

Thoughtful Thursday - Dental Access

I haven't made use of it yet as I discovered it only this week, but there are free dental screenings in Ottawa for people who have a low income. I'm not sure what happens at these things, but I imagine they're rather like the once or twice yearly visits we had in grade school from the health unit where they checked our teeth. Anyway, I thought I'd mention that in case anyone is in need. There is a schedule with the locations listed and I'm guessing it's hard to get there early enough to get seen, but I'll check it out soon. I've been using dental products that are supposed to repair and whiten. I'm unsure they are working, but I figured they were worth a try. Also, I hear if you add activated charcoal to your toothbrush before the toothpaste, it helps whiten too. It makes a hell of a mess, but I tried it. I think it might take a while to whiten, but my teeth are definitely cleaner, so I think it really does help with plaque. Activated charcoal is als...
