BIO

My name is Rae Roy and I am a professional writer with over a decade of writing experience. I write scripts for film, theatre, television, and interactive content. I am experienced with English transcription and described video. I also write novels. I live in Canada's National Capital Region.
Education
After high school, I achieved a Social Work diploma, but I ultimately decided I was neither patient nor worldly enough to guide others, so I obtained two Computer Networking diplomas and several related certifications. For about five years, I worked as a computer technician, but I felt like there was more I could be doing with my life, so I enrolled at Nipissing University and completed a Business Degree specializing in Technology Management. A lifelong love of writing led me to pursue my passion and I recently completed a graduate certificate in Scriptwriting.
Work Experience
In high school, I delivered catalogues and cleaned a friend’s home to pay for school activities like drama club. One college summer, I worked at a fast food place and had my first lessons in working with others. My first computer job had me doing help desk for the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services. Then I accepted a position as a computer technician at the local police station where I began doing some technical documentation.
My business degree lead me to project management and process improvement work in rail, telecommunications, and the print/e-publishing sectors. Some of the documents I have helped put together include RFPs and responses to RFPs, disaster recovery plans, user guides for technical equipment, and process flow diagrams. Currently, I work in procurement at a federal contractor.
In 2010, I began seriously pursuing my fiction writing. I've had short stories and articles published. At this time, my works in progress include three novels and a feature film.
Hobbies
In recent years, I played a season of roller derby, but the extreme contact sport led to more injuries than I’m comfortable with for myself. I tried to referee, but it wasn’t something I enjoyed, so now I stick to cheering the players on.
One of my major passions outside of writing is martial arts, so I practice a relatively obscure and mainly theory-based katana sword art called Iaido (pronounced eee-eye-doh). I also dabble in another lesser known art called Jodo, which uses a short staff. Once upon a time, I studied karate.
Another passion is music. I love to listen to music, to attempt to play several instruments, and to write songs. Guitar is the instrument du jour for me.
Family
I’m the youngest of three children and the only girl. My parents are in their seventies and have been married for over 50 years! Their chocolate poodle supplies us all with endless amusement.

2024 - Week 5

It was still January for most of this week, a.k.a. The Neverending Month. Then it became February!  Each month, I do pull a card from my Music Oracles deck. Last month was Bob Marley. February's card is Nina Simone. A piano playing rebel & multiple genre legend will hopefully make for a phenomenal month ahead. I still haven't done a goals post for 2024. January was a lot. My goals for this year are: - Complete Sparker  and query agents. - Complete The Curse of...  and submit it to a screenplay contest. - Complete the declutter of Tiny Condo. - Blog at least once per week. - Cross train for curling and softball. - Learn piano. - Self-care with crafts, reading, gaming, and sports. I've tweaked my schedule to make this happen. I'd also like a partner, but I feel weird about setting it as a goal.

Frisky Friday - Maple Syrup Porn

[caption id="attachment_10523" align="alignright" width="300"] Image created using Bitmoji[/caption] While delving into some Canadian film history this week, I learned that there is a thing called Maple Syrup Porn. I laughed when I read the term. I thought, "Is our adult film industry really called Maple Syrup Porn?" It's not. Some is Canadian, but it mostly refers to getting around censorship of sex. It was not only common in Quebec due to religion, but several places in the US. You can read more about it here . If you're looking to heat things up this weekend, consider a sweet old film from the early days of the sexual revolution. Maybe even drizzle a little syrup on your partner ;) Guid cheerio the nou, R~
