2024 - Week 43

Arts & Crafts

I started a summer quilt. I got the fabric a long time ago and it was a straightforward quilt as I just had to join the 20 fat quarters together. I'll need a backing fabric and a border to complete it, but I figured it's worth doing while the weather continues to be summery. I'm thinking a white backing and pink for the border.

I've made progress on my Fairy Cross-Stitch, but there is a lot to go yet.

Decluttering & Minimalism

I started the week by working on the space to sand my shelf. I didn't get through it all on Monday with work and everything else that day, but it was closer than it was before. Tuesday was curling, so I couldn't the shelf done then. I was really tired on Wednesday because I'm not used to curling being so late yet. Thursday was the last day of softball. It was Friday before I could really work on the shelf, though I kept working on the workspace. The packed weekend left me no time to do this, but I realistically expect that it will happen after Can-Con because there are some decals I will be adding to my car on the upcoming warm day. There aren't likely to be a lot more warm days to do this kind of thing, but there will be a lot more indoor days for the shelf.

Gaming & Streaming

I've been wanting to get back to streaming Cyberpunk 2077. I'm slating it for after Can-Con. I'm hoping my shelf project will be done and then it will be easier to fit it in.

My Minecraft buddies planned a group building day for this week. I was looking forward to it. We actually just hung out rather than building anything specific. We raced pumpkin automobiles, ate virtual candy, and just relaxed. The low key day was exactly what I needed.

Goal Setting & Tracking

Arts & Crafts: Royal blue on Fairy Cross-Stitch project (60%)
Decluttering & Minimalism: Workspace for Shelf project (40%)
Gaming & Streaming: MC Buddy Build Day (100%)
Lifestyle & Sports: Curling and softball (66.6%)
Music & Songwriting: 1 Fender Play lesson (0%)
Reading & Writing: 1 chapter of The Chatelaine (100%)

Lifestyle & Sports

On Monday, I survived the Condo AGM and helped get a friend voted to the board to rep my building. He used to do a lot around the place before an injury happened. He helped with my bathroom reno as much as was possible. He's a good dude and he and his wife have a sweet little yorkie. Anyway, after that, I waited for stew to cook in my instant pot. I used some Apothic merlot in it and I hoped that would give it a really good flavour. It smelled delicious raw, so it was a torturous 45-minutes. Of course, I had to taste the merlot to ensure it was still good.

The stew made me so warm I was sweaty! And it was delicious.

Curling went well on Tuesday. I wasn't chilled and I was given a tweak that really upped my ability to throw on target. I did a takeout and got some other rocks in the desired places. I still suck at shots that are near the side boards, but I hope I'll eventually learn some tricks for those.

I had this moment at curling where I felt like I was exactly where I was meant to be. It was quite a turnaround from the first session this season where I felt like I had forgotten everything. Our trainer admitted he was worried after the first session with us, but that we improved a ton by session three. I was worried still because I had missed session two! But it all worked out.

Wednesday was tough due to lack of sleep. I can't remember what I did last season to get through this, but I think daylight savings helped and that is next week. So is Can-Con, which I'm thoroughly looking forward to. I have put all the panels I'm attending into Sched for the event.

Thursday brought a hair appointment to refresh my fade. After that, I ran into my massage therapist at the grocery store. That evening was playoffs for fall softball. We lost by one point, but it was a vast improvement from a few weeks ago. We came far in a short time.

Friday was a productive day at work. I got an amendment done that had kept getting interrupted by more pressing things. It felt good to finally cross it off of the to-do list. I finished altering the bulk of my Halloween costume and visited some friends at my curling club. It was a nice, low-key night.

On Saturday, I realized I forgot to hem the arms of my coveralls, so I listened to Ray Bradbury's The Halloween Tree while I worked on those. I also fortified the collar. Then I attened a Zoom meeting with my clan; my first since attending the Highland Games in the summer. I could only stay a little while as I was off to a Halloween Party at the Bronson Centre. I actually wore my Cubone costume instead because it was way too cold to wear my other one. That would be saved for Halloween Night.

It was a really fun night and the costumes were high quality. I drank too much and I haven't been able to eat well lately, so I was very ill the next day and had to miss curling. I feel really bad about that, but moving and bending were just not possible.

Music & Songwriting

I didn't get anything accomplished here this week. I had too much else going on. Things will calm down soon and I'll be able to focus more on this. I'll also be part of All Voices choir in November, so I'll have weekly music stuff going on.

Reading & Writing

Lately, I'm really thinking that my one screenplay should actually be a TV show, so I need to do things quite differently and work on a show bible instead. This means writing a couple of episodes and then having synopsis for at least a season of episodes. The story feels too big for me to write alone and needs a writers room to make it happen or it won't do the story justice. That was the deciding factor. It's more of a campaign than a one-shot. I think the story engine is good.

2020 Vision

Mostly, I’ve been planning for the new year, but I discovered I know Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. It was a recollection under the influence that brought this to light. I also discovered I still suck at drawing, but I’m okay with that. I used to think I had to be good at everything, and I’ve realized that’s just not so. Some friends and I recently hit up a local board game pub. It was a pretty fun night. The first game was Balderdash and I was terrible at it. Because I was the writer in the group, some of my friends thought I should be more embarrassed about it and hide the fact that I don’t spend all my free time learning advanced vocabulary. But I’m not upset about it. Why? Two reasons: 1. I now know what I don’t know. 2. If one takes a close look at the top selling novels on the market, the level of the language used is not the level of many of the words in Balderdash. Not that I’m comparing my own work to those, but audience is what matters in writing. To me, it is far better to e...

Fortifying Friday - Rejection

Yesterday, I received my first rejection from an agent. It stung. It wasn't that it was bad. It was worded in a way that it may have even been personally written. Regardless, rejection never feels good unless you were secretly hoping to stay home and do nothing when a friend made plans with you. Then it feels great! I might be an introvert ;) Anyway, it hurts a bit extra when you have other things going on. Between the worries of the state of the world and being unemployed, it felt much like being kicked while I was already down. The agent said she couldn't connect with my book though she really wanted to. She also said not to take her rejection as any kind of sign that I should give up. It was nice as far as rejections go. So, I lay there for a bit. Then I let my friends know via social media. Several said that I had hit a milestone and I should try to collect as many as possible this year. Rejections, they said, were a badge of honour awarded for putting myself out there. See...

Thoughtful Thursday - Dental Access

I haven't made use of it yet as I discovered it only this week, but there are free dental screenings in Ottawa for people who have a low income. I'm not sure what happens at these things, but I imagine they're rather like the once or twice yearly visits we had in grade school from the health unit where they checked our teeth. Anyway, I thought I'd mention that in case anyone is in need. There is a schedule with the locations listed and I'm guessing it's hard to get there early enough to get seen, but I'll check it out soon. I've been using dental products that are supposed to repair and whiten. I'm unsure they are working, but I figured they were worth a try. Also, I hear if you add activated charcoal to your toothbrush before the toothpaste, it helps whiten too. It makes a hell of a mess, but I tried it. I think it might take a while to whiten, but my teeth are definitely cleaner, so I think it really does help with plaque. Activated charcoal is als...
