More On Losing A Parent

Now that I'm more removed from it, I can talk a little more about the phenomena that is losing a parent.

It's an odd experience that hits in many ways and it affects those around you in various ways as well.

Friends who had been through it were either giving me a knowing look, a hug, or offering to be there if I needed anything. Some people were rather intrigued in a way because they couldn't conceptualize what it would be like. Some were so close with their own mothers that they couldn't be around me too much because they didn't want to think about the possibility of it happening to them. And some were going through it soon after, so we could attempt to help each other through some of the tough moments.

Some of my friends reached out to reconnect with their own mothers after I lost mine. Even if they had horrendous upbringings involving things like drug addiction or alcoholism.

Losing a parent is hard. Some people accept it more easily than others. I know someone who sticks pretty close to the other parent who is left and their life has been changed considerably by the loss.

There are still days where it hits me and some tears come. I'm sure that it will be worse at Christmas this year.

I think the hardest part of all of it is seeing that some good came from the loss. No, I'm not saying I'm happy in any way that my mother is no longer in my life. But my mom was mentally ill and some things could be quite challenging that no longer are, so there are times that I feel guilty for being able to see the good that has come from it.

Their house got cleaner than it had been in decades. We really came together as a family in a way I don't think I've seen in many decades. My dad and my eldest brother are talking more than they ever have in all the years I've known them.

And for whatever reason, I feel the most free to be myself that I've ever felt. Prior to it happening, a friend had told me that our family seemed stuck. We're not anymore.

Maybe it's because losing a parent hits home in a way that is like an attack on one's own mortality. Prior to losing my mom, it was something experienced from the outside and at a distance. It was slightly less real because I often didn't know the parent a friend had lost and had no concept of who they were. All I knew was the world had one less person in it and my friend was upset. I couldn't conceive of the magnitude of the loss. The strangest thing about losing a parent is that even if your relationship wasn't the strongest, you can feel the loss deeper than you ever imagined you would.

It alters everything.

SEPTEMBER GOAL REVIEW

I don't feel like I got that much accomplished in September, but I handled a car repair that has been outstanding for several years. It was a big, expensive, frog to eat. I also made strides forward on my novel despite not completing edits on chapters I haven't edited as much as the previous ones. There was an element that I knew was missing and I finally figured it out. I think that it's OK to not complete goals sometimes. I've been working on foundations to be able to make it easier to achieve goals in the future. And I've been working on changing things around my home in line with that.

I'm part of Danielle Allard's Dino community, which is filled with delightful chaos, and the starred goals are my priority ones for the month. They are the ones I'm reporting on there. I've found quarterly goals to be too much.

2020 Vision

Mostly, I’ve been planning for the new year, but I discovered I know Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. It was a recollection under the influence that brought this to light. I also discovered I still suck at drawing, but I’m okay with that. I used to think I had to be good at everything, and I’ve realized that’s just not so. Some friends and I recently hit up a local board game pub. It was a pretty fun night. The first game was Balderdash and I was terrible at it. Because I was the writer in the group, some of my friends thought I should be more embarrassed about it and hide the fact that I don’t spend all my free time learning advanced vocabulary. But I’m not upset about it. Why? Two reasons: 1. I now know what I don’t know. 2. If one takes a close look at the top selling novels on the market, the level of the language used is not the level of many of the words in Balderdash. Not that I’m comparing my own work to those, but audience is what matters in writing. To me, it is far better to e...

2024 - Week 9

The week felt really long.  Arts & Crafts My calendar was looking quite packed, so I wasn't sure if I would get the time to reclaim my crafting space or not. Luckily, I had Friday afternoon off because I have some vacation I need to use up. I've got time off every Friday in March and I'm looking forward to it. I began reclaiming it on Thursday, so I could relax more on Friday as I had that earmarked for reading and relaxing. On stream, I began sticker bombing the doors of my media cabinet. One has dinosaurs. Another has games and music. Door three has neon stickers. The final door will have pride stickers on it. I didn't get started on it. I also ran out of stickers, and had to wait for more to arrive. I'll be working on it more during the week and I will likely not finish it on stream as I'd like to get my doors back onto my cabinet as soon as possible. The craft is a mix of fun and frustration. Decluttering & Minimalism I took it somewhat easily this w...

Change is in the Air

I've been making a lot of changes lately around my home and some of them might seem a little odd, but they're making me happy. One thing I've done is taken apart my dining table. I never eat in there or have people over to eat. It was just another horizontal surface that would collect things like receipts, odd screws from various projects, and countless piles of paper. I had been frustrated because of the clutter it encouraged, but also because I didn't have a space for my Yamaha keyboard. I had been trying to use my keyboard in the living room, but it felt too cluttered and it wasn't sitting at the right height. With it now in my dining room, I was able to relocate my storage bench, which happens to be the perfect height to sit at while playing my keyboard. I now have much more breathing room. There is still a lot of mess to handle here yet, but I'm making solid progress. A lot of people suggest the bedroom is the place to start when decluttering, but I haven...
