2024 - Week 39

Week 39 was full of creative energy. I took steps forward on some projects I've been stalled on and I laid the foundations for future projects.

Arts & Crafts

This week, I've been working on my Fairy Cross-Stitch. I'd really like to get it done and on the wall. I'm a very long way away from that, but it was nice to work on it while watching one of my favourite movies, The Long Kiss Goodnight, which stars Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson.

I also made a new patch for my jacket.

Decluttering & Minimalism

Many swear words were yelled as I tried once again to fix my bathroom door situation. This thing has been a saga. The original door was large and swung inward, so even I had difficulty closing the door while inside the bathroom. So I tried a farmstyle door, but that was cracking the drywall above my door frame. Next, I tried just using the wood door I had from that, but I hated it. I tried a folding closet door, but I didn't put the track in the right spot.

This week, I got the track adjusted after fighting with it. I have epoxy in case it decides not to stay in place. Next up was all the steps to repair the bottom of the door, so it can be put in place and used.

It's not perfect, but it's as perfect as I could manage with a lack of space to work properly. I used the professional strength wood glue.

Along with the glue, I also got the wood I needed for a shelf that will join my bookshelves together and cherry red paint for the shelf and all my doors. If there is any paint left after painting all of those, I will paint the inside back of my bookshelves.

Next week, I may fill in some of the hole with some fake wood putty stuff to help ensure it's good for a long time. I'm also hoping to clean it up and paint it.

Gaming & Streaming

As usual, game night was a lot of fun. We battled more kobolds and teamed up with an underground creature who resembles a hell hound with a humanoid face. He wanted to kill kobolds because they invaded his home. We also eventually found our missing butcher who was happy to be returned home.

On Sunday, I tried to play some Minecraft with friends, but I was up late both of the preceeding days and I had to crash.

Goal Setting & Tracking

Arts & Crafts: Fairy Cross-Stitch (25%)
Decluttering & Minimalism: Fix the bathroom door (33%)
Gaming & Streaming: Weekly Pathfinder campaign (100%)
Lifestyle & Sports: Q2 Softball Game (100%)
Music & Songwriting: Continue researching genres (Good)
Reading & Writing: Nothing specific.

Lifestyle & Sports

Thursday was softball with Q2. Unfortunately, we lost quite badly, but with some minor tweaks I think we'll have a closer game. I would've had two runs if the timing was better.

On Sunday, I finally got to the dance store to get my first pair of tap shoes. I'm pretty excited to get using them though I won't likely have time until softball is done in October.

With curling starting on October 1st, I'm spending Monday getting ready for it, getting some things done around Tiny Condo, and watching something related to Truth and Reconciliation Day.

Music & Songwriting

I wrote down some lyrics. I don't know if it'll ever turn into a thing that exists in the world outside of my own files, but it's a thing that exists. I'm listening to a wider variety of music these days and I have no idea what style I'd want to do anything in. My natural rhythms seem to lean towards blues, but most of what I listen to is symphonic metal, pop punk, and rap rock.

Sometimes, this journey is about listening to albums I haven't in a very long time. Those ones that helped form me. Songs that I identified with as a teen may have different meaning after decades have gone by.

Reading & Writing

I didn't have a goal set this week as it's the transition from my summer activities to my autumn ones, but something got into me this weekend and I wrote out an outline for a screenplay. I also wrote down ideas for a book.

I'm still stuck on the current screenplay, but I think I accidentally created a structure to outline the rest of the story.

2020 Vision

Mostly, I’ve been planning for the new year, but I discovered I know Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. It was a recollection under the influence that brought this to light. I also discovered I still suck at drawing, but I’m okay with that. I used to think I had to be good at everything, and I’ve realized that’s just not so. Some friends and I recently hit up a local board game pub. It was a pretty fun night. The first game was Balderdash and I was terrible at it. Because I was the writer in the group, some of my friends thought I should be more embarrassed about it and hide the fact that I don’t spend all my free time learning advanced vocabulary. But I’m not upset about it. Why? Two reasons: 1. I now know what I don’t know. 2. If one takes a close look at the top selling novels on the market, the level of the language used is not the level of many of the words in Balderdash. Not that I’m comparing my own work to those, but audience is what matters in writing. To me, it is far better to e...

Fortifying Friday - Rejection

Yesterday, I received my first rejection from an agent. It stung. It wasn't that it was bad. It was worded in a way that it may have even been personally written. Regardless, rejection never feels good unless you were secretly hoping to stay home and do nothing when a friend made plans with you. Then it feels great! I might be an introvert ;) Anyway, it hurts a bit extra when you have other things going on. Between the worries of the state of the world and being unemployed, it felt much like being kicked while I was already down. The agent said she couldn't connect with my book though she really wanted to. She also said not to take her rejection as any kind of sign that I should give up. It was nice as far as rejections go. So, I lay there for a bit. Then I let my friends know via social media. Several said that I had hit a milestone and I should try to collect as many as possible this year. Rejections, they said, were a badge of honour awarded for putting myself out there. See...

Thoughtful Thursday - Dental Access

I haven't made use of it yet as I discovered it only this week, but there are free dental screenings in Ottawa for people who have a low income. I'm not sure what happens at these things, but I imagine they're rather like the once or twice yearly visits we had in grade school from the health unit where they checked our teeth. Anyway, I thought I'd mention that in case anyone is in need. There is a schedule with the locations listed and I'm guessing it's hard to get there early enough to get seen, but I'll check it out soon. I've been using dental products that are supposed to repair and whiten. I'm unsure they are working, but I figured they were worth a try. Also, I hear if you add activated charcoal to your toothbrush before the toothpaste, it helps whiten too. It makes a hell of a mess, but I tried it. I think it might take a while to whiten, but my teeth are definitely cleaner, so I think it really does help with plaque. Activated charcoal is als...
