2024 - Week 29

Arts & Crafts

This week's crafting plan was the cape for my Drag & Balls costume. A friend offered to make a part for me and my shoes came in the same day I was meeting him. I love it when a plan comes together! That's a common Dad Roy saying.

Decluttering & Minimalism

I think I decluttered myself out of the wig I was going to alter for my costume. I'd be upset, but I'll have a better wig that is stylable instead. I don't regret getting rid of things I wasn't going to be using. The old one was from a steampunk Buffy cosplay I did very long ago and it was just plastic crap.

Gaming & Streaming

I've started the currently last tier of rich soil for my vertical farm setup. This final level is for flax, which gives me an animal-free way to obtain wool for things. I'm not much for the effort that animal husbandry takes, so this is nice. Chickens would be nice to have for eggs. I'd rather help someone else get cows going for meat and leather.

Goal Setting & Tracking

Arts & Crafts: Start the cape. [Done]
Decluttering & Minimalism: Continue cleaning up the house. I know this is vague, but I'm seeing a lot of progress with this lately while I'm busy with so much else.
Gaming & Streaming: Finish getting the rich soil into place. [Done]
Lifestyle & Sports: Do more cardio.
Music & Songwriting: Deal with my violin.
Reading & Writing: Edit Chapter 16.

Lifestyle & Sports

Monday was supposed to involve a batting practice, but it got cancelled due to the weather. Thunderstorms and metal bats aren't meant to go together, so I wasn't entirely unhappy about this.

Tuesday brought a trip for some necessary items like allergy meds and food because the chicken I had was freezer burnt. I also replaced my cabin air filter in my car, but forgot to check the engine air filter.

On Wednesday, I had my first post-surgery Myofunctional Therapy appointment. After work, I met my friend and picked up my shoe order.

Thursday was an in-office day. In the evening, I had my first day of zumba. It's OK. A lot of variations on the two-step that are set to Latin music. I survived the hour, though it was challenging.

At Friday's softball game, I had some good opportunities, but I didn't make it. Sometimes things people tell me short circuit my brain for a bit until someone else tells me something. Last year, I was told to stand on home plate. Well, I'm short and the ball almost never comes right to me, so it wasn't a great tactic. But going to the ball absolutely makes sense, but I was all locked up in the brain. The fun of neurodivergence sometimes.

On Saturday, I went to a party in Cantley. We played lawn games until it rained then switched to karaoke.

Sunday was my usual Pathfinder game night. There was a moment with a giant kitty. The teeny, blue-haired gnome beside the kitty is my character.

My friend's cat Bones.

But then I rolled a nat 20 and all was well ;)

Music & Songwriting

I got the stuff for keeping my violin better tuned and promptly broke the e string. It may seem silly, but I think I'm going to get new e strings and change the fine tuner for that string. Luckily, violin strings come individually, so I can get a couple of spares. I've read that it's common to have the e in one brand and model and the rest of the strings in another. I feel like my e could be subtler and warmer, so I'm going to buy a new string based on that. All of that will happen eventually. Life has been a bit much lately and I've had to spend on my costume.

I'm using a recorder to continue learning with. I stumbled onto Sarah Jeffery and I like the simplicity and portability that recorders offer. I have a cheap plastic one from the dollar store, but a nicer wooden one is on the way.

Reading & Writing

I've been feeling burnt out, so I didn't make any progress here this week. I don't tend to do most of my writing in the summer anyway. It's the time I spend experiencing things worth writing about.

2020 Vision

Mostly, I’ve been planning for the new year, but I discovered I know Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. It was a recollection under the influence that brought this to light. I also discovered I still suck at drawing, but I’m okay with that. I used to think I had to be good at everything, and I’ve realized that’s just not so. Some friends and I recently hit up a local board game pub. It was a pretty fun night. The first game was Balderdash and I was terrible at it. Because I was the writer in the group, some of my friends thought I should be more embarrassed about it and hide the fact that I don’t spend all my free time learning advanced vocabulary. But I’m not upset about it. Why? Two reasons: 1. I now know what I don’t know. 2. If one takes a close look at the top selling novels on the market, the level of the language used is not the level of many of the words in Balderdash. Not that I’m comparing my own work to those, but audience is what matters in writing. To me, it is far better to e...

Merry Monday - A beautiful day for taxes

[caption id="attachment_4711" align="alignright" width="300"] Image created using Bit Strips.[/caption] With French done, I have a lot of other things to catch up on. It seems like I have Mount Everest ahead of me, but I'm just going through the list one at a time. I've gotten a couple of things done and some started. Renovations Before the weekend, my new kitchen floor was installed. After the credits that Jiffy gave me, install cost less than $40. The old floor was light grey peel and stick tile, which was peeling itself up on the edges. Because I couldn't get all the glue up from the floor underneath the peel and stick, I needed to put new floor in. Oh, I started peeling it up with a hair dryer. I really don't recommend that. It doesn't get hot enough to work well. It was taking around 20 minutes each tile with the hair dryer. With a proper heat gun, a couple hours for the whole floor. Fortifying Friday - Rejection

Yesterday, I received my first rejection from an agent. It stung. It wasn't that it was bad. It was worded in a way that it may have even been personally written. Regardless, rejection never feels good unless you were secretly hoping to stay home and do nothing when a friend made plans with you. Then it feels great! I might be an introvert ;) Anyway, it hurts a bit extra when you have other things going on. Between the worries of the state of the world and being unemployed, it felt much like being kicked while I was already down. The agent said she couldn't connect with my book though she really wanted to. She also said not to take her rejection as any kind of sign that I should give up. It was nice as far as rejections go. So, I lay there for a bit. Then I let my friends know via social media. Several said that I had hit a milestone and I should try to collect as many as possible this year. Rejections, they said, were a badge of honour awarded for putting myself out there. See...
